Year 6: Locating Integers on the Cartesian Plane Lesson Sequence

Build understanding of locating and representing integers on the Cartesian plane with this focused lesson sequence, designed to develop students' conceptual understanding through explicit teaching, visual models and guided practice. Students explore how coordinates are used to represent exact positions on a grid, learn to plot and interpret points using the x-axis and y-axis, and develop an understanding of how movement across horizontal and vertical number lines combines to locate positions in all four quadrants in relation to the origin (0,0).

Built around the I Do, We Do, You Do model, this lesson sequence guides students from explicit instruction to supported practice and independent application. Through modelled examples, collaborative discussion and structured mathematics tasks, students investigate the Cartesian plane, plot and interpret coordinates, identify points within each quadrant, and explain their mathematical reasoning using accurate mathematical language.

What's included in this teacher resource?

• Comprehensive lesson sequence focused on locating and representing integers on the Cartesian plane
• Clear learning intention and success criteria centred on plotting and interpreting coordinates using the x-axis, y-axis, origin and quadrants
• Explicit instruction and modelled examples demonstrating how to plot coordinates on the Cartesian plane
• Guided practice tasks supporting students to locate, plot and interpret coordinates
• Activities that develop skills in identifying and describing the position of points in all four quadrants
• Opportunities for students to explain and justify their reasoning using mathematical language
• Built-in check-ins for learning to monitor understanding throughout the lesson
• A formative exit ticket to assess understanding of plotting and interpreting coordinates on the Cartesian plane

Perfect for upper primary classrooms, this lesson sequence develops students' conceptual understanding of the Cartesian plane while building confidence locating, plotting and interpreting coordinates using the x-axis, y-axis, origin and quadrants. Students strengthen their spatial reasoning and apply coordinate skills using visual models and mathematical language.
